Reach New Heights with Playcraft Systems’ New Skywalk Bridge

Innovation in playground design continues to create exciting new ways for kids to play, explore, and challenge themselves—and Playcraft Systems’ new Skywalk Bridge is a perfect example. This exciting addition brings a whole new level of adventure to the playground experience, creating a feature that stands out visually while delivering a fun and engaging play opportunity.

Why Kids Love Elevated Play

Children naturally love opportunities to climb, balance, and challenge themselves. Elevated play features help encourage:

Play elements that create a sense of accomplishment often become some of the most popular features on a playground, and the Skywalk Bridge delivers exactly that experience.

Innovation Meets Evolving Playground Standards

As playground design continues to evolve, so do industry standards. Recent updates to ASTM F1487-25 playground standards have opened the door to new and innovative play experiences, allowing manufacturers like Playcraft Systems to develop exciting features such as the Skywalk Bridge and create opportunities for play at heights beyond those of traditional structures.

One of the most significant changes within the updated standards is the evolving approach to fall height evaluation. Traditionally, fall height was based solely on the highest accessible point within a structure. The updated ASTM standards now recognize that fully enclosed play environments can reduce realistic fall exposure when designed with proper containment, controlled openings, and non-climbable exteriors.

This advancement expands what is possible in playground design, allowing for taller, more immersive play experiences while continuing to prioritize safe, engaging, and developmentally beneficial play for children.

Bringing the Next Generation of Play to Communities

We’re excited to see innovative products like the Skywalk Bridge helping transform parks and playgrounds. New features create fresh experiences that keep children engaged and provide communities with play spaces that feel unique and memorable.

If you’re planning a new playground project or looking to bring something exciting and different to your community, we’d love to help you explore how the Skywalk Bridge and other Playcraft Systems innovations can fit into your design.

Building and Maintaining Safe Playgrounds

There is nothing quite like the sound of kids laughing and running around a playground. These spaces are the heart of our communities, giving children a place to burn off energy, make friends, and learn new skills. But behind all that fun, there is a serious element that makes it all possible: safety.

With Playground Safety Week running from April 20–24, it is the perfect time to talk about what goes into creating and maintaining a secure play space. At Luckydog Recreation, we know that a great playground is a safe playground. Let's look at how we can keep our community parks fun and secure for everyone.

When children play, they are doing much more than just having fun. They are developing critical physical strength, coordination, and social skills. A well-designed, safe environment encourages this growth while minimizing the risk of serious injuries.

For parents and caregivers, a safe playground offers invaluable peace of mind. Knowing that the equipment is secure, the surfacing is soft, and the layout is smart allows adults to relax and let kids do what they do best: play freely.

Building a safe playground starts long before the first swing is hung. It requires careful planning and a deep understanding of industry guidelines.

At Luckydog Recreation, we strictly follow the standards set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). This means we pay close attention to things like "use zones"—the critical space under and around equipment where a child might fall. We also ensure every design is fully ADA compliant, so children of all abilities have the opportunity to play together safely.

You might wonder who actually decides what makes a playground safe. That is where Certified Playground Safety Inspectors (CPSI) come in.

Having CPSI-certified professionals on our team means we don't just guess when it comes to safety. Our experts are rigorously trained to identify potential hazards, understand complex safety codes, and ensure every bolt, slide, and safety surface meets the highest national standards. When you work with us, you are partnering with professionals who have made playground safety their core mission.

Even the most beautifully designed playground needs ongoing care. Weather, heavy use, and time can all take a toll on equipment and surfacing.

Regular inspections are the best way to catch small issues before they become big problems. A loose bolt, a worn-out swing chain, or displaced safety surfacing can easily go unnoticed by the average visitor. Routine professional maintenance ensures the playground remains just as safe as the day it was installed, extending the life of the equipment and protecting the children who use it.

We have created checklists to help you maintain your equipment to ensure longevity.

Playground Safety Week (April 20–24) is a great reminder to check in on your local parks. Here are a few ways your community can get involved:

Creating a joyful, secure space for children takes dedication, expertise, and ongoing care. Whether you are planning a brand new park or need to make sure your current equipment is up to standard, our team at Luckydog Recreation is here to help.

Don't wait for a broken piece of equipment to become a hazard. Celebrate Playground Safety Week by taking a proactive approach to your community's play spaces. Contact us today to schedule a comprehensive inspection with our CPSI-certified professionals, and let's keep the fun going safely.

PLAYGROUND SURFACING EXPECTATIONS AND MAINTENANCE - PART TWO

Are you choosing the right fall protection for your situation?

Now that we’ve covered loose-fill surfacing options in Part One, it's time to explore unitary surfacing solutions that offer different benefits and considerations. These materials have become increasingly popular due to their durability, low maintenance requirements, aesthetic appeal, and wheelchair accessibility. However, they also come with their own set of costs and expectations that are important to understand before making a decision.

The number one issue we see with purchasing these unitary options is the lack of understanding about the potential costs of maintenance. More on that below!

How Shade Structures Improve Park and Playground Safety

Shade has become an essential feature in modern park and playground design. As communities prioritize safety, comfort, and year-round usability, providing shade structures is no longer a luxury—it’s a necessity. From protecting children on playgrounds to improving comfort for caregivers and park visitors, shade plays a critical role in creating successful outdoor spaces.

Why Shade Matters in Parks and Playgrounds

Custom Canopies Shelter in Salt Lake City Utah

Parks are meant to be places where families gather, play, and stay active. Without adequate shade, high temperatures and direct sun exposure can limit how long visitors stay—or prevent them from using the space altogether.

Key benefits of adding shade include:

Shaded playgrounds are more inviting and safer, especially during peak summer months.

Playground equipment, surfacing, and surrounding amenities can heat up quickly under direct sunlight. Hot surfaces increase the risk of burns and discomfort, particularly for young children.

Installing shade structures over playgrounds helps:

Shade directly supports playground safety while extending the life of play equipment and safety surfacing.

Creating Comfortable Spaces for All Ages

Ivory Ridge Park Lehi Utah

Shade benefits more than just children. Parents, caregivers, and older adults are more likely to stay and supervise when seating areas, benches, and gathering spaces are protected from the sun.

Incorporating shade over:

creates a more welcoming and inclusive park experience for all ages.

We work with two trusted shade manufacturers that specialize in high-quality, durable shade solutions for parks and playgrounds.

Both Coverworx and Custom Canopy provide shade solutions that are tailored to each site’s layout, equipment, and usage needs.

Shade Structures Can Be More Affordable with Grant Funding

Many parks and municipalities are surprised to learn that grant funding may be available to help offset the cost of shade structures. Shade is often considered a health and safety improvement, making it eligible for various local, state, and national grant programs.

We provide grant information and guidance to help our customers:

Grant funding can make adding shade more achievable and accelerate park improvement projects.

Investing in Shade Is an Investment in Community Health

Adding shade to parks and playgrounds improves safety, increases usability, and supports healthier outdoor experiences. Shaded parks encourage families to stay longer, visit more often, and enjoy outdoor play comfortably throughout the year.

Castle Hills Park Reimagined: A New Inclusive Playground for Boise, Idaho

In 2024, the Castle Hills community in Boise faced a major setback when a fire destroyed their neighborhood playground. But out of that loss came an inspiring story of community involvement, resilience, and renewal. After the City of Boise put the project out to bid, the community was invited to vote on their favorite design—and we’re proud to share that Luckydog Recreation won the vote and the opportunity to rebuild this beloved play space.

Today, Castle Hills Park is home to a brand-new, fully inclusive, ADA-friendly playground designed to welcome children of all ages and abilities. This large Playcraft Systems playground features:

One of the standout additions is a brand-new innovation from Playcraft Systems: Terrain Effects—elevated natural-feeling mounds that add a whole new layer of creative movement and exploration. At Castle Hills Park, these mounds are connected by the Nimble Bay Bridge, creating a unique adventure path kids can climb, balance, and navigate.

We’re incredibly proud of how this project came together and grateful for the trust the community and the City of Boise placed in us. Castle Hills Park is now a place where families can gather, children can play freely, and inclusion is built into every corner of the design.

Here’s to a fresh start and many years of safe, joyful play for Boise’s families!
